2023 Tourism Updates

Agritourism in the city.

Manufacturing camote and other locally produced farm goods at the Rootcrop Processing Center—the flagship center of Baybay City’s agritourism—is an unprecedented program of City Mayor Jose Carlos L. Cari in partnership with Visayas State University (VSU) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Said project also has the full support of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, headed by City Vice Mayor Ernesto M. Butawan and Committee Chair on Tourism, Councilor Carmen L. Cari.

With the establishment of the Rootcrop Processing Center and the Jackfruit Processing Center, the city government provides a steady and viable source of income for the local crop growers. It also creates opportunities for Baybay City to be known for its impressive agritourism    industry      through agri-food tours with “Baybay Delights” as the City’s showcase brand for root crop and jackfruit end-products.

The City has unremittingly promoted its products under Baybay Delights, including Jackfruit Chips, Cassava Chips, Kamote Chips, and sweet potato-based ice cream, in various trade shows and expos. One such recent event is the “KAON TA, KAIN PA” Food Tripping Festival held in Davao City, where Baybay Delights products took center stage on the third day of the said festival and were a         massive        hit        among convention-goers.

Way forward.

Sustainability wise, the city government created people’s organizations for root crops and jackfruit growers. This is the LGU’s strategy to guarantee that there is appropriate monitoring of the City’s   assistance   and      proper maintenance    of   the programs ensuring its efficiency in the long run.

The end goal of agritourism is economic growth. Through the programs of the city—from providing various farming assistance to the production and manufacturing of their crops, thereby ensuring a sustainable value chain for local crops—many idle farmlands have since become re-established and highly productive. A few vegetable farms are now adopting new farming technologies generating higher profitability. Moreover, there are ongoing constructions and improvements of farm-to-market roads to enable cost-effective transportation of farm goods to the local markets—upland barangays like Monterico now have better road access to Makinhas.
